New Build Update

Thank you for your generous gifts toward our new building. We are still in the process of raising funds for our new building.  With our new state of the art theatre we will be able to present more high quality productions to the Hilltop Community.

A PERMANENT HOME TO HONOR BLACK CULTURE AND CREATIVITY

T.U.P.A.C. DANCE STUDIO/KABBY MITCHELL III THEATRE

T.U.P.A.C. is a non-profit Black arts institution located in the historically Black Hilltop Community of Tacoma. We are working with the Tacoma Housing Authority to build a new state-of-the-art performing arts center as an anchor to THA's ’s Low Income Housing Complex to be located on S. 11th St and L St. in the high opportunity Hilltop District.

The future 10,000 square foot center is being designed as a multi-use space for instruction and performance. The Black-led non-profit is the only studio/theatre in Tacoma that exclusively showcases BIPOC performing arts. We are working with Mithun, an integrated design firm dedicated to creating positive change in people's lives, to design and complete the dance studio/theatre space. Mithun designed PNB’s Francia Russell Center in Bellevue and numerous performance spaces throughout the country.

The combined dance studio/theatre space anchors T.U.P.A.C.’s connection to the Hilltop community and increases opportunities to showcase and promote the creative and cultural art works of Hilltops Black artists.

The lobby will serve as an Art Gallery, highlighting and selling the work of Hilltops Black artists.

T.U.P.A.C. non-profit Black ownership business model creates a sustainable wealth-building mechanism for long-term community possession, designed to exercise ownership control to stem displacement insecurity within the Black Community.

Building for the Arts (BFA) is a program that awards state grants to nonprofit community-based organizations to buy, build or renovate arts and cultural facilities. It is managed by the Washington State Department of Commerce. Washington State Building for the Arts grant can cover up to 33% of eligible construction costs.

Typically for projects in Pierce, King Co, or generally along I-5 corridor, they’re going to want to see up to about 40% raised at the time of application (non-state funds). If we’re at, say 25% fundraising at time of application or even less that’s not a bad thing, it all depends on the pool of applicants and how much they’ve already raised.

TUPAC will be responsible for raising the remaining funds in advance of signing contract in 2023.
