Before I attended Seattle Good's first Good Gala in 2023, I thought I knew what it was about. After meeting the community, experiencing their joy and hearing about all of the amazing things they had done, I realized that once again, I was very wrong.  I have worked in and with nonprofits for more than a couple of decades and I have never been as inspired and moved as I was at that Gala.

On the Seattle Good's website, their "About" page, briefly give you an excellent insight to who they are and what they have done.  In this day and age of hyper-marketing lingo, you would not be blamed for glossing over the second sentence of the "Who We Are" section, "We envision a vibrant, inclusive and sustainable local economy that supports resilient, prosperous and joyful communities."  They are, after all, merely words.  That is, until you get to see the team in action living out every element of that sentence.

I had the privilege to join the Board about one year ago and little did I know that my first taste of Seattle Good was just an appetizer.  The entire organization lives and breathes every one of their values in all that they do; and they do a lot.  Each of their many programs is deeply committed to helping the community and creating an economy that leaves no one behind or excluded.

For example, one of the oldest programs, Seattle Made, focuses on supporting companies that make consumer products in the city of Seattle.  Unlike many other trade organizations that support a cohort of businesses, Seattle Made works hard to ensure that the diverse community of businesses is represented.  Many other such organizations try to attract the biggest and most profitable companies so they can charge them substantial dues for being part of the organization.   Seattle Good has taken a fresh approach to supporting these businesses by promoting community and sharing of resources and experience among these companies.

Last year, Seattle Good was proud to work with Cascadia Produce and Cedar Grove to help the Good Food Exchange and Lettuce Help Center create a food rescue hub that, in its first two months, diverted 300 tons of good food from being disposed of in a landfill.  That amount of food would fill over 15,000 bags of groceries, which would create a line of grocery bags that was almost 5 miles long.  The food was made available to farms, food businesses, food security organizations and other institutions.  This is just one of the projects of Good Food Exchange that uses technology and innovative solutions to create new eco-system the promotes food equity and a culture of dignity.

I humbly ask that you consider making a significant donation to Seattle Good so that it can continue to work with the amazing Seattle business community to develop a sustainable economy that includes everyone.  After years of successful programs, we need to focus on fortifying the organization so that it can continue to grow and serve.  When you check out Seattle Good’s website, I would like you to keep in mind that all of this work has been done with about 10 paid employees.  Your generous donation will allow the staff to grow and make Seattle Good’s compensation packages on par with the other companies and governmental entities doing this work in Washington.

My goal is to raise $10,000 for Seattle Good before the end of the year.  I hope you will join me in supporting this amazing organization.
