Growing Home Collective puts Black people squarely in the driver’s seat of their own agency and self-determination, connecting people to and prioritizing the resources that are present right in the Black community. A prime example of this occurred when a woman joined a native plants workshop for the first time, hoping to manage stress levels, and find ways besides medication to lower blood pressure. The group included a yoga teacher, Ayurvedic and herbal practitioner, naturopathic nurse practitioner, somatic movement trainee, and a number of gardeners; while processing fresh mint leaves they all echoed the same desire to improve their wellness. At the end of the workshop, the woman tearfully expressed her joy in finding a place with Black women of all different backgrounds, experiences, and diverse skills. She felt at home with others who looked like her and with whom she could grow, relax, learn, and heal.
