"Where are the Kids?"
Toys For Kids, founded by Mariners Broadcaster Rick Rizzs and former Seattle Mariners Center Fielder Dave Henderson, began with a simple question in September of 1995: "Where are the kids?" This inquiry, prompted by a news report on Seattle's homeless count, ignited their determination to support homeless and disadvantaged children, particularly during the holiday season.
Initially, their efforts were modest, rallying fellow Mariners players to donate toys, resulting in over 300 toys being distributed in their first year. However, they soon realized the magnitude of the need and expanded their initiatives.
Since our humble beginnings, Toys for Kids has grown into a beacon of hope for children in need, offering seven distinct programs designed to empower and uplift young lives:
1. College Scholarships: Toys for Kids $5,000 college scholarship was established to honor the legacy of Dave, who believed in upholding high standards and a commitment to the community. This scholarship recognizes exceptional high school seniors who reflect these values and have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to service in their communities.
2. Back to School Supplies: With the start of every school year, the struggle to obtain essential school supplies can be difficult for some families. Luckily, Toys for Kids is here to help provide school children with the necessary materials to succeed. Backpacks, pens, paper, and other basic supplies are donated to children in Washington State, making it easier for them to learn and grow.
3. FLY First Love Yourself: First Love Yourself, or F.L.Y., is a powerful message that encourages people to prioritize their own well-being. This is especially important for those who are going through tough times, such as individuals staying in domestic violence and homeless shelters. Toys for Kids has partnered with a Joe Bae hair salon to provide these individuals with a special day of pampering and self-care. They receive haircuts, manicures, and makeovers, and even get to take home a gift bag of treats.
4. Rick’s Locker: We recognize the positive impact and outcomes that come with participating in sports, including social connection, mental and emotional well-being, and physical development. However, we understand that the cost of registration fees, uniforms, and equipment can be a barrier for many kids from income-restricted families. That’s where we come in. Our mission is to provide access to youth sports for everyone, regardless of their financial situation. We pay for the necessary expenses, so that kids can simply play and enjoy the benefits that come with being part of a team.
5. Hot Lunch: Hot lunch debt is an issue that affects many children in schools across the country. For many students, a nutritious lunch is essential for providing them with the energy and focus they need to get through their school day. Unfortunately, some families struggle to afford the cost of school lunches, leading to hot lunch debt. Thankfully, Toys for Kids is stepping up to help. Each year, Toys for Kids chooses a school district to pay off their hot lunch debt, ensuring that every child has access to a healthy meal. This is an incredibly important initiative, as it helps to alleviate the financial burden on families who are already struggling to make ends meet.
6. Holiday Toys: The holiday season is a time of joy, love, and giving. It is a time when families come together to celebrate and enjoy each other’s company. However, for many families, the holidays can also be a time of financial strain. By hosting a holiday party for children, we can ensure that they have a chance to celebrate the season and receive gifts from Santa Claus.
7. Teddy Bears: Toys for Kids is on a mission to sprinkle a little bit of happiness into the lives of those brave little warriors in our local hospitals. Through our Teddy Bear Program with Murano Senior Living, we are giving children a cuddly companion to ease their stay and bring a soothing sense of security.
This expansion reflects our commitment to addressing various needs of disadvantaged youth throughout the year, beyond just the holiday season.
Despite this growth and diversification, Rick and Dave maintain their focus on ensuring that the vast majority of donations directly benefit children in need. Through their tireless fundraising efforts, they have raised over $4.7 million, acquired more than 500,000 toys, and organized over 200 holiday parties. This track record underscores their unwavering dedication to bringing joy and hope to underprivileged youth in the Seattle area.
With your generous support, we can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of countless children across our community. Join us in our mission to create brighter futures and lasting memories for every child we serve.
Together, let's GiveBIG WA and make a world of difference for children in need.
