The Greenway Mission

The Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust leads and inspires action to conserve and enhance the Mountains to Sound Greenway National Heritage Area. This iconic 1.5 million-acre landscape stretches from Seattle to Ellensburg along the I-90 corridor, connecting Central Washington, the Cascade Mountains, and Puget Sound. The Greenway Trust is a coalition-based organization that works to steward these lands, all while promoting access to the outdoors and striking a long-term balance between the needs of the natural world and the people who call this region home.

Our Work

We use a wide range of tools to achieve shared conservation goals across the region. We protect natural spaces and our animal neighbors' habitats by restoring forests with native trees, removing noxious weeds, and advocating to conserve lands and waters that provide maximum benefit for people and wildlife.

We also build and maintain many miles of sustainably designed trails, helping people confidently and safely explore the wild beauty of the Greenway landscape, while preserving the sensitive ecosystems around them.

The impacts of this work are amplified by our youth education program, which uses science-based outdoor learning and career training opportunities to empower the next generation of environmental champions and changemakers.

Why Should You GiveBIG for the Greenway?

More than 30 years of collaboration, tireless dedication, and passionate support have made the Greenway what it is today — a spectacular natural landscape, easily accessible to our thriving cities and communities. Our work would not be possible without the personal investment of donors like you!

When you give to the Greenway Trust, you support work like:

  • The YESS program (Youth Engaged in Sustainable Systems) and Clean Water Ambassadors, paid internships that provide high school students with real-world restoration ecology and water systems experience, setting them up for success as future environmental leaders
  • Restoring and nurturing forests for a climate-resilient future
  • Improving river habitat to support endangered salmon throughout their life cycle, giving them critical protection along their incredible journeys to and from the ocean
  • Building important recreational infrastructure — think trails optimized for safety, restroom  facilities, and informational signage — that protects nature while enhancing people’s connection to it
  • Elevating the cultures and stories of communities throughout your local National Heritage Area
