The Deaf-Blind Service Center (DBSC) is committed to assisting deaf-blind people in reaching and maintaining their highest possible quality of life and degree of personal autonomy.
Established in 1986, DBSC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization located in the heart of Seattle. Through your support, DBSC strives to increase the independence of deaf-blind individuals by supporting their ability to perform daily life tasks, bring down communication barriers, and enhance self-confidence.
The DeafBlind Service Center is truly a unique and special place. Why do we say this? Well, at DBSC, we offer a wide range of specialized services specifically tailored for the DeafBlind community! Those who are classified as deafblind have both hearing AND vision loss to varying degrees. Our professional staff possess the skills needed to aid in providing high quality communication access to the community. For example, since September of 2023, there were nine different deafblind persons that needed to go to the emergency room or urgent clinic. As you can imagine, it can be quite a challenging experience being unable to see and hear while trying to communicate about a health crisis! The doctors and nurses did not know how to communicate without the use of tactile (touch) interpreters. It was frustrating and emotionally draining for all involved. The deafblind patients felt helpless, isolated, and frustrated because they did not know what was going on with them! This is when the DeafBlind Service Center (DBSC) is especially needed. Our Client Advocates met with them and were able to provide much needed assistance. They arranged for tactile interpreters to effectively provide communication for both parties involved. to . Also, they educated the doctors and nurses on some basic ways they can communicate with deafblind patients in the future. Imagine what would happen without these unique and special services, especially in serious situation such as this! One person said that DBSC saved him! Tactile Interpreting and Client Advocacy are just a few of the amazing services that DBSC offers to our DeafBlind Community. We would not be able to strengthen them without the generous support from people like you!
DBSC would like to encourage you to donate to our Advocacy Services so that we can continue to be there in time of need. Any amount is truly appreciation! Our goal is to raise $10,000.
