THE MISSION
Africatown Community Land Trust’s mission is to acquire, develop, and steward land in Greater Seattle to empower and preserve the Black Diaspora community.
THE VISION
We envision vibrant and thriving Black Communities through land ownership.
THE WHY
Economic Empowerment
Economic empowerment forges pathways for individuals and communities to gain greater financial stability and independence. For the Black community in the U.S. and in this case—Seattle’s Black community—economic empowerment has been historically hindered by systemic barriers to housing and land ownership. These barriers have perpetuated the cycle of poverty, disempowerment, and disenfranchisement, limiting opportunities for economic mobility and security.
ACLT's culturally responsive programs and affirmative strategies work to ensure that Black families and individuals have equal access to these opportunities. This work not only addresses the immediate housing needs of the community but also provides a pathway for long-term economic empowerment.
Preservation of Black Communities
ACLT's work is crucial to the preservation of Seattle's Black community and its traditions. By providing access to affordable housing and resources for economic empowerment, ACLT is ensuring that Seattle’s Black community can thrive. Donations to ACLT don’t just directly support the building of affordable housing but fortifies its ability to preserve the culture and community of Black Seattle.
THE HOW
Land Acquisition, Development, and Stewardship
ACLT has been a driving force in the Seattle community since 2016, tirelessly working to develop land assets necessary for the thriving of the Black community. Despite substantial obstacles and barriers, ACLT-in partnership with the community has achieved significant success in just a few short years with the acquisition and development of affordable housing projects offering over 200 units of low-barrier housing to the community, ensuring continued accessibility for those who need it most.
THE WIN + HOW YOU CAN HELP
Self-sustaining, culturally, and economically thriving Black communities where those who have been historically displaced and marginalized can thrive in place is our goal. Despite various challenges, we forge ahead to create the future we-inspired and empowered by the voices and support of the community-want to see. We recognize that we cannot do this work without support from those who also believe in and value a just and equitable society.
