Young Shakespeare Workshop

A nonprofit organization

Mission

Young Shakespeare Workshop's mission is to give all youth the opportunity and skill to fall in love with words, and to celebrate the extraordinary power of performance to illuminate and explore life experience.

Description

Young Shakespeare Workshop, is a community of young people, teaching artists, alumni and family who care deeply and passionately about performing Shakespeare.

Programs are tuition free and engage a wide spectrum of individual participants. Academic year projects and residencies provide opportunities at high schools serving predominantly low-income students where theatre arts are severely limited or unavailable, while free summer programs, open to all, draw together participants from all around Seattle and King County, offering multi-year opportunities for continued depth of skills, growth, and community.

Young Shakespeare Workshop creates community, confidence, and understanding through the collaborative learning and practice of artistic skills and performance production - specifically complex language and theatre arts. While Young Shakespeare Workshop is open and free to all youth (ages 11-24), its especial focus is to reach those with the least access.

In the East Room of the White House in 2011, Young Shakespeare Workshop was awarded the nation's highest honor for community-based arts organizations, the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award.

"It makes me look around and take a careful look at every detail, I see my fellow classmates put work into their character and a world starts to build up around the words we speak the actions we make and then when it comes to an end, I pause and look at all of my friends conversing, laughing, learning, and standing taking a final bow on the stage together as a family of creativity then I thought this is the best time I spent doing anything." - JaVonn
