Stacy's Funny Farm

A nonprofit organization

Mission

Stacy's Funny Farm is an all-volunteer non-profit small pet sanctuary just north of Seattle. We contribute to the local community by offering permanent sanctuary to a limited number of homeless exotic pets. Public shelters don’t always have space or expertise to properly care for the little guys and our expertise ranges from parakeets to capybaras. No dogs and cats allowed!

Description

We’re not a typical rescue, so we don’t normally have pets available for adoption. We offer a service for caring people in transition who want to see where their pets will live out their lives. Our owners like to visit and many of them keep in touch and donate toward the care of their pet. Like a typical rescue, we also take in feral strays: dumped Easter ducks, escaped parakeets, random roaming hens, the occasional hoarding situation. We also help other local rescues by taking in unsocialized animals such as aggressive drakes, animals languishing in foster care, and older animals which can be difficult to place. In some cases, we assist in re-homing, such as for a thirty-year-old Koi, or a handicapped hedgehog.

There is a human story behind every pet rescue. We may never know why someone left a cage of finches next to a dumpster, but we provide peace of mind to cancer patients who can no longer care for their pets. Our sanctuary helps transferred owners who find that their new job in Hawaii means leaving their rabbit or gerbil behind. Restrictive chicken ordinances produce homeless elderly hens, and many urban chicken experiences are cut short by urban predators. What are you supposed to do with your one remaining but traumatized hen? Where can you foster your ducks while you search for a new home?

Our sanctuary is home to these animals. They have space to explore, a steady supply of treats, and they live a very long time. Vinny is a 13-year-old runner duck, blind, partially deaf, and very confused. We have hens living past ten years, a bunch of doves that can’t be under twenty. The turtle has been here over ten years. One of the guinea pigs made it to his tenth birthday here! Old animals require specialized care, housing adjustments, and veterinary care. We have seen cancer, heart conditions, diabetes, and more. Old animals are like us: old ones can develop medical issues.

Honoring our late great pet capybara, Dobby, who captured the hearts of countless visitors, we remain active in the capybara community. In conjunction with the ROUS Foundation, we consult with capybara owners worldwide, providing care advice for diet, housing, and behavioral issues. Our capybara experience makes us unique among the local pet rescue community.

Stacy's Funny Farm is discreetly located on a private residential dead-end street with our popular Little Free Library. Neighbors are rewarded with a glimpse of our frisky Shetland sheep during daily meet and greet opportunities at the front yard. Wool samples, chicken and duck eggs, and feathers for crafts are usually available. Our normal programming includes appointment-only farm visits in addition to. (Sorry, we currently have no capybaras on site.) We also offer volunteer opportunities for local high school students in a fun, safe environment.

Our website at www.stacysfunnyfarm.wordpress.com features monthly blog posts. You can learn all about capybaras at www.petcapybara.com.
