Seattle Universal Math Museum

A nonprofit organization

Mission:

Seattle Universal Math Museum (SUMM)’s mission is to spark each and every person to love math

Description:

SUMM will build a dynamic museum to house engaging math exhibits, hands-on experiences, programs, and play areas to stimulate inquiry and reveal the wonders of mathematics through play and exploration.  SUMM will be a space for learners to engage with math in hands-on, fun ways that spark curiosity and ignite new ideas that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.  We will take you on a math journey and create opportunities for exploration, discovery, and growth.

In partnership with community-based organizations, SUMM is already creating equitable learning opportunities that serve as a launchpad for curiosity and confidence in math.  We meet students where they are and support learning math from a cultural perspective, valuing the historical and current excellence and contributions to mathematics from around the world. SUMM provides culturally responsive student/family/community outreach and engagement practices. We hire staff from the diverse populations that we strive to serve.

Background:

Math is universal – it’s everywhere and for everyone. We all engage with math daily, when approximating time, calculating how much to spend or save, estimating distances, or doubling recipes.  Math provides us with a problem-solving foundation essential for life and careers.  And it enables us to appreciate connections in the world around us.

But currently, we have a math problem.

The Puget Sound region is a global hub for technology and science; it leads the nation in the growth of STEAM sector jobs. And, yet, Washington ranks 41st among states in terms of math competency.

Traditional learning settings often only teach the most basic math concepts. Students miss out on math’s connections to other disciplines and applications beyond the classroom. Many learners become discouraged and lose confidence in their abilities as early as 3rd to 8th grade—a critical age for math confidence and learning.

SUMM inspires marvel and instills joy in math learning for children at this critical juncture of 3rd to 8th grade, which will impact their opportunities and fulfillment for the rest of their personal and professional lives.
