Mission

Mission Africa aims to empower children and families in the South King County Communities and the remote villages of Africa by providing support in three core areas education, healthcare and poverty alleviation.

Description

Our COVID-19 Efforts:

King County Food Assistance Project:
Since the start of the pandemic, food security continues to be one of the most reported issues from the families we serve locally and globally.

In late October, Mission Africa distributed grocery vouchers to 51 South King County families (240 household members total) through the Food Assistance Project funded by King County Public Health. The project helped provide means for the Washington State families in need, to purchase food for their households.

CCR Brothers & Sisters Program:
In many households worldwide, youth assisting their parents with younger siblings is a relationship dynamic that is very common.
Mission Africa partnered with Child Care Resources for the Brothers & Sisters program, an 8-week online course in which teenagers learn a curriculum rich with topics that will help them become better caregivers for the children they care for.

MAFF Project:
The shift to virtual learning was tough for many students and their parents. Extra support can help ensure that these students do not fall through the cracks academically.
Mission Africa partnered with First Five Years & Beyond and the University of Washington to provide virtual tutoring to African students, from kindergarten to 6th grade in South King County. The tutoring will provide academic support and promote healthy social skills. All tutors will be background checked.

Menstrual Hygiene Outreach to Girls in Nigeria:
Young girls and women in rural and remote communities in Nigeria are largely uninformed about their menstrual periods. This ignorance, socio-cultural taboos, and the high cost of sanitary products, lead them to using unhygienic materials for menstruation, resulting to serious health consequences. As COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact negatively on the economy globally, these young people suffer also.

In May 2020, Mission Africa partnered with PALCare Nigeria, to identify six rural/underprivileged communities within the South-East and North-Central States of Nigeria and provided menstrual hygiene education and reusable sanitary pads to a total of 132 young girls in these rural communities.
PALCare Nigeria is a nonprofit organization established in 2016 and registered in 2019 to provide health care services to people in less privileged communities in Nigeria and beyond through voluntary and evidence-based methods.

Food Assistance in Africa:
During this COVID-19 crises, several of our African communities reported food scarcity as being their main concern, and many worried about their children going hungry. Since then, Mission Africa has provided food supplies to hundreds of families in several States in Nigeria.

King County Ethnic/Cultural Food Assistance Project:
Mission Africa has partnered with King County Public Health for another food assistance program, aiding local families who have struggled with food during the pandemic.

In early December, we distributed $200 gift cards to 30 local African families for the South King County communities of WA State, with a combined total of 127 household members!

King County fully funded the gift cards, from Bah's African Store in Kent, Washington. As a small business, Bah's has struggled to stay afloat this year. This program allowed families to access ethnic and cultural foods that are not readily available at major chain stores, while supporting a small, local, African business. Amazing!

Volunteering:
Mission Africa's Executive Director has volunteered weekly since April 2020 at Overcomer Covenant Church in Auburn Washington, to help distribute groceries to families in need.

Post COVID Economic Recovery Program (PCER):
Mission Africa is proud to announce our Post COVID Economic Recovery Program (PCER)!

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced many small business owners in Nigeria to shut down their operations. The purpose of PCER is to help give them a jumpstart back into business.
PCER has provided 15 micro loans to small businesses in the amount of 200,000N - 400,000N, the equivalent of about $500-$1,000 USD.
This April, we shifted our focus from healthcare to poverty alleviation. We hope to help business owners get back on their feet and relaunch.
