The mission of the Methow Valley Citizens Council is to raise a strong community voice for protection of the Methow Valley's natural environment and rural character.
High above the fields, forests and hillsides of North Central Washington's Methow Valley, the red-tailed hawk patiently rides the sky, surveying the landscape with acute vision, watching for the smallest shifts below that could mean the difference between a meal and an empty stomach. With the same patience and determination as the hawk, the Methow Valley Citizens Council (MVCC) has been protecting the life-giving water, abundant wildlife, and expansive landscapes of this valley and region since 1976.
Our job at MVCC is to "watch like a hawk!" We notice when something could degrade the natural environment and rural character of this Valley and rally our community to take action. Over the decades, we have led campaigns to prevent an Aspen-sized ski resort from being put in near Mazama and helped to permanently protect the Methow River headwaters. Much of our work occurs at the county or local level where we have helped to push through minimum lot sizes, advocated for long term solutions to share a limited water supply, and led a collaborative effort to create a Methow Valley Climate Action Plan.
MVCC is a critical environmental steward in a region renowned not only for its agricultural abundance and unparalleled beauty but for its four seasons of recreational bounty. Defined by landscapes and river corridors that support farmers, ranchers, and local families, the Methow has retained its rural character while welcoming visitors from all over the world to hike its trails, run its rivers, and ski its corduroy. With rapid growth, rising home prices, and development pressures, the Methow Valley continues to be in a vulnerable position. MVCC makes sure our community's voice is not only heard, but integrated into management decisions that impact this beautiful, unique place.
