Our Mission

We are a small but mighty nonprofit working to serve unsheltered families in our greater Seattle community. Founded in 1990, the House of Hope, our emergency shelter for women and children, offers a refuge of safety and support to families in a compassionate home setting. The mission of Mamma's Hands is to help those experiencing crisis to regain their self-confidence, and to provide the support needed to become productive members of our society. Our vision is Hope in every Individual!

Description

Located on ten wooded acres nestled at the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, the House of Hope offers 24/7 housing and professional support services designed to help families on their journey to self-sufficiency. Weekly case management, onsite parenting classes, domestic violence support services, financial literacy and emotional resilience groups, and job readiness activities empower our residents to address their barriers to stable housing. Through our partnership with over 75 social and community service providers, families have access to substance abuse disorder treatment, behavioral health services, legal aid, medical and dental care, youth and teen services, and much more. We simply could not do the work we do without these amazing providers, and together we form a strong care team for each of our resident families.

Once families graduate from the House of Hope into long-term housing, we continue to work with them through our robust two-year Aftercare Program. Available services include monthly case management, an open invitation to join us for shelter skillset classes and recreational outings, back-to-school and holiday support, and eviction prevention assistance. This continued network of support helps hard working moms address barriers that may put their housing at risk, such as a missed paycheck due to illness or a minor car repair, and helps keeps families in their homes.

We serve between 6 to 7 families at a time at the House of Hope, and currently have 125 women and children enrolled in our Aftercare Program. When families walk through the door of the House of Hope, they have stepped out of homelessness onto a path toward their forever homes. Most importantly, hope is restored.

How You Can Help

Nearly every family who comes to the House of Hope is either employed, is seeking to become gainfully employed or desires to further their education to be able to provide for their children. Family homelessness is not an issue of unwillingness to work. 80% of the families we serve at the House of Hope have experienced domestic or gender-based violence. With a significant shortage of childcare post-COVID-19, the high cost of living in our area, and the lack of affordable housing, it is almost impossible to climb out of homelessness without support.  We know the model of the House of Hope works - 98% of families who complete our program obtain and retain stable housing for at least two years or longer. Lives are changed, and children are enjoying their happy, healthy new homes.
