Mission

The Magnuson Park P-Patch is a volunteer-led community garden. Our mission is to enhance the Park's open space with colorful organic vegetables and flowers. Produce donations are made to the University & Lake City Food Banks. Visitors can meander, stop to talk to gardeners, and see how the garden changes through the seasons.  Previous fundraising has significantly improved perimeter pathways and drainage in the garden.  2024 fundraising will continue to renew pathways, update foodbank plots, add more plots for gardeners with mobility challenges and plan for art in the garden.

Description

The Magnuson P-Patch is located within the Magnuson Community Garden, a four-acre site at Magnuson Park. The P-Patch began in 1977, and was relocated and then officially opened in the current site in March 2003. The P-Patch has 140+ year-round plots. The Magnuson Park Community Garden is one of the largest in the Seattle P-Patch system, consisting of more than 30 food bank plots (also known as Giving Gardens) that are planted and harvested by Magnuson P-Patch volunteer gardeners specifically for donation. In addition to plots tended by individuals, there are plots dedicated for food bank donations, community groups, the Children's Garden, pollinator gardens, and Magnuson Community Center Nature Programs. In addition, the P-Patch also provides garden demonstrations, such as pollinator gardens and research.

Gardeners also donate from their own P-Patch gardens. Organic produce donations are made to the University & Lake City Food Banks including to the programs for families and singles located in Magnuson Park Mercy Housing. The food bank plots are planted with starts and seeds provided by the P-Patch's gardeners, as well as with seeds provided by Lettuce Link of Seattle's Solid Ground organization and vegetable starts are provided by the Seattle Giving Garden Network. The Magnuson Community Garden Food Bank Program receives donation starts from the nearby Nathan Hale High School Horticulture program, the most extensive high school horticulture program city wide.
