Mission

The Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) develops, owns, and operates housing for the benefit of low-income, homeless, and formerly homeless people in Washington state; advocates for just housing policies at the local and national levels; and administers a wide range of supportive service programs to assist those we serve in maintaining stable housing and increasing their self-sufficiency.

Description

LIHI combats poverty and homelessness through it's programs:

Affordable Housing: LIHI provides affordable housing to low-income and homeless individuals, families, seniors, veterans, and persons with disabilities. LIHI has a portfolio of over 3,500 permanent and transitional housing units at over 75 properties in the Puget Sound region. Over 4,000 people live in LIHI housing, including over 700 families with children. Over 72% of LIHI's units house formerly homeless persons.

Tiny Houses: LIHI operates 18 Tiny House Villages in Seattle, Tacoma, Skyway, Bellingham, and Tukwila for homeless individuals and families. These villages provide secure, private, warm shelter in a community setting. On-site case managers help residents find permanent housing and jobs, and help them connect to other social services.

Urban Rest Stops (URS): LIHI's Urban Rest Stops provide free hygiene and health services to homeless people in three locations in Seattle. Having a safe and dignified environment where homeless people can use restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities makes a world of difference. Hygiene services, health information, and referral services are all provided free of charge. The URS has been in operation since 2000 and serves an average of 600 homeless people each day in Downtown and Ballard.

Supportive Services: LIHI provides supportive services to over 1,800 residents to increase their stability, self-sufficiency, and employability. Services include: case management, resource coordination, information and referral services, crisis intervention, basic needs purchases, independent living skills training, and educational programs.

Advocacy: LIHI has a record of successfully fighting for social change and progressive policies to end homelessness and combat poverty. LIHI provides legislative testimony and communication with state and national elected officials.
