Your gift to the the Humane Society of Jefferson County WA will provide the best care possible for all of Jefferson County's lost, abandoned and unhoused dogs and cats....care for over 650 animals a year. Your giving today helps provide comfortable shelter, healthy food, medical exams that include spaying/neutering, vaccinations, microchipping, and parasite prevention, and carefully screened adoptions.
Each of these animals have experienced multiple traumas including loss of their homes, their human families and companions. Many cats and dogs spend their first few weeks at the shelter confused and disoriented--not daring to trust for fear of that trust being betrayed--again.
Your gift pays caring staff and volunteers who build relationships with them, nourish and prepare them for a better life in a home environment.
Your gift today will provide the best care and food, even special diets for animals with allergies or health problems, as well as creature comforts like raised beds and blankets, along with toys, socialization, walks, lap-time and a lot of love.
The shelter has two part-time Veterinarians, a licensed Vet Technician, and several "jill-of-all-trades" employees who provide vaccinations and spay/neuter clinics for people in Jefferson County needing financial assistance. These services are provided in a state-of-the-art mobile surgical trailer purchased by the shelter in 2020 to help expand its circle of care.
You gift ensures that Jefferson County will never return to its sad history of when dogs or cats arriving at the "pound" were granted only a few days to live before being euthanized for lack of time and space.
The first small animal control facility was built on Hasting Avenue in 1953, at time when Jefferson County was overrun by stray dogs and cats, before spaying and neutering animals was a common practice. With so many running wild, the first shelter existed mostly to round them up and control the population by disposing of them. In those days, most families could not afford veterinary care, and so puppies and kittens of pets were also given to the shelter to dispose of.
You and I don't ever want to go back to those days.
Your gift today to the Humane Society of Jefferson County WA provides relief to the pet overpopulation crisis by offering low-cost spay and neutering services to those who cannot afford veterinary care.
The current shelter at 112 Critter Lane, on the outskirts of Port Townsend, was originally built and operated by Jefferson County in the early 1990s. In 2012 the County gave total responsibility for animal services to the Humane Society of Jefferson County, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit.
The Humane Society, with a $500,000 per year budget, receives no funds from the Humane Society of the United States.
Your gift to the the Humane Society of Jefferson County will provide the best care possible for all of Jefferson County's lost, abandoned, and unhoused dogs and cats.
Each of these amazingly resilient animals is worthy of your big-hearted gifts. Please give generously, the animals will forever be grateful for your kindness!
