Who We Are

The Bellevue Botanical Garden Society was founded in 1984 by a group of passionate neighbors who worked to transform a 7.5-acre property generously donated by Cal and Harriet Shorts into a public botanical garden. After years of planning and dedication, the Garden opened to the public in 1992.

Today, the Bellevue Botanical Garden is celebrated as one of the top botanical gardens in the U.S. Spanning 53 acres, the Garden offers a stunning mix of cultivated gardens, restored woodlands, and natural wetlands. We welcome more than 475,000 visitors annually from around the world—all free of charge.

As the Garden's primary nonprofit partner, the Bellevue Botanical Garden Society plays a vital role in supporting the Garden's growth and development by investing significant funds to enhance and improve the Garden's beauty and sustainability. In addition, we offer a diverse range of programs, including classes, lectures, and hands-on workshops for all ages, as well as engaging educational experiences for over 2,700 K-5 students each year through our free Living Lab program.

Together with the City of Bellevue, we have built a world-class garden and exceptional educational programming.
