Alley Cat Project is a 100% volunteer-run, non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the community cat population in Seattle through humane solutions. Our primary mission has always been trap-neuter-return (TNR) to prevent future litters and improve the lives of feral cats. However, due to the pandemic and the city shelter no longer intaking most cats, we have expanded our efforts to include socializing, fostering, and adopting out kittens and stray cats.
Every dollar we raise goes directly back to the cats, as our overhead is minimal, thanks to the fact that we do not operate a brick-and-mortar location. Instead, our foster cats are placed in homes throughout the city, ensuring they receive the individualized care they need.
Our feral cats are housed in recovery cages in a heated garage to minimize stress during their recovery. To keep their stay as short as possible, we trap them as close to the spay/neuter clinic as we can. After the procedure, we monitor them for 2-3 days to ensure they are healthy enough to return to the outdoors before releasing them back to their original home.
We also run a Working Cat Program, where feral cats who cannot return to their original location—whether due to safety concerns or other reasons—are placed with local businesses as indoor mousers. This is part of our full-circle TNR approach: we don’t leave any cat behind and ensure that the reproduction cycle is ending through responsible trapping, neutering, and return.
In addition to spaying and neutering feral cats, we also vaccinate, microchip, and provide any necessary medical care. If a cat requires additional treatment, we re-trap them and ensure they get the help they need. We work closely with colony caretakers by supplying food, warm shelters, and ensuring there is someone to feed the cats regularly.
For every cat that shows potential for socialization, we are dedicated to giving them the time and care they need to thrive, whether it’s a mama cat and her kittens, bottle babies, or cats needing extra socialization. We also take on special cases, including foster hospice (fospice) care and cats needing ongoing medical care to be ready for adoption.
We are committed to community outreach to educate the public about the importance of spaying and neutering and to raise awareness about the needs of community cats. Through this, we hope to inspire more people to take action and support the cause.
Donate today to help us continue our mission of improving the lives of Seattle’s community cats. Your support enables us to provide medical care, shelter, and second chances for cats in need. Together, we can make a lasting impact and ensure a brighter future for all the cats we serve.
