Mission
At Second Cycle our mission is to demystify and normalize bike riding as a part of daily life, and realize the bicycle is a tool for personal and community empowerment. We are working toward a more bike friendly world where the joy of riding a bike is accessible to every one.
Description
Second Cycle was formed in May 2008 by a group of cyclists, bike mechanics, and bike messengers who simply had the desire to see more people on bikes. We started out in a tiny, cramped basement garage where we only had one folding stand, a milk crate of spare parts, and very limited tooling. Over the next several years, we worked diligently, helping people work on their bikes, raising funds, and building our community.
Through programs, service, education, and advocacy, we address some of the many needs of our community:
-The need for affordable, safe and reliable used bicycles;
-The need to offer basic services such as flat fixes and brake/drivetrain adjustments at no cost to those experiencing financial hardship or homelessness;
-The need for a place to recycle old bicycles, removing them from the waste stream and repurposing the parts that still have useable life;
-The need to empower our community with knowledge and access to tools in our Community Tool Space so that they can service they're own bikes;
-The need to provide youth with opportunities to connect positively with cycling through outreach programs;
-The need to provide safe space for Women-Trans-Femme-NonBinary Folx who are often excluded from cycling culture.
